Car insurance for the retired/unemployed

I was made redundant last month and my car insurance is now due. For reasons I can't understand if I now say I am unemployed the policy goes up from £150 to £200 but if I change it to retired it comes back to £150. I am due to get a pension next month so can I simply declare myself as retired? It is also £150 if I specify house husband!

It is just the use of statistics - statistically the unemployed are more of a risk than the other groups. Are you actually retiring and becoming a house husband when you receive your pension next month - if so then declare as such but if you are job hunting and receiving job seekers then declaring anything other than unemployed could lead to problems if found out. If you are genuinely short term "between jobs" in a set occupation then declaring as that occupation should not be a problem.

To muddy the waters even more, I have considered myself semi-retired for the last 5 years as I reduced to a 3 day week and whilst I do want another job it will be part time - so I can maintain my semi-retired status

    Anyway thanks for your response!

Just be aware that the insurance company can see what you have been doing re quotes - and will use this for their own use should you need to make a claim before you actually retire.

Whilst off work on the sick i was told if i was claiming benefits then i was unemployed.

I was on sick pay at the time so it had less of an impact, But they wouldnt cover me if i was unemployed and in receipt of benefits.

To change this all slightly - thanks all for the responses. How do I determine my status? I do not see myself as unemployed, I don't need an income to survive but I would like some income to pay for the odd holiday - until other pension income kicks in. Where can I find the precise definition of each status?

Each insurer will have their own terms. As i mentioned the one i was asked if i received any benefits. They wouldnt be able to insure me if i was.
