Renting from my brother - HB scaring me

  • Thanks Mics Chick. I had a feeling that was the case. I'll take it out.

Thanks to all for their advice as I'd be bound to say the wrong thing (always giving tmi)
  • Is this any better?

    8) Please confirm if your brother purchased the property for you to move into:

My brother did purchase the house with the intent of me living there, but this was planned a while ago, as my landlord gave me notice in March that he needed me to move out of his house which really distressed me. I also had to move out of another tenancy the previous year due to the landlady needing to sell her property.

In early March I phoned the Housing Benefit office to check that I would be allowed to rent a house from my brother, and was told that it would be fine as long as it was a proper tenancy, and that he did not live with me. As both of these conditions were met he went ahead with finding and buying the house. My brother bought the house as a long-term investment, knowing that as his tenant I would take good care of his property.

    Much better Tabbylady :T :T :T :D
You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an
"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs :p :rotfl:
  • hi tabbylady also consider the fact if you managed to get your own house, say you met someone with their own place and decided to move in to it. would your brother sell the house he is renting you, I guess he may not. Don't just think along the lines he is only keeping the house for you widen the picture, if say he kept the house ten years and rents overtook where they are now, and he was making a profit, you left of your own accord. would he not rent out again I would guess he would. So when they ask the question would he rent again think on that lines you are not lying just widening your views.
  • Hi all,

Just thought I should update you - I received a benefit decision notice, and I'm going to receive HB. I'm so relieved by this. It looks like I'll only get the first payment on 10th September, but at least there's an end in sight.

Thanks to all of you for your advice and encouragement. It really was appreciated at a very miserable time for me.

Now I have another question - My job has come to an unexpected end (It was an 8 month temping job), and I was wondering if now that I've got HB, I might be able to qualify for a grant of some kind to study a course or two in adult education to improve my prospects? It's not so much the money for the courses, as money for childcare when the courses would clash with out-of-school hours.

Has anyone else actually done this?

    Thanks

Probably best to start a new thread - no-one's going to be reading this one unless they know about HB, so you'll miss the experts on grants/loans/childcare payments.

im really suprised that they carried out a 'contrived interview' via letter. we usually call the claimant in for an interview.

glad its all been sorted for you. 9 times out of 10 we do pay HB to those renting from relatives.
There's someone in my head, but it's not me
