Old Share Certificates

Have been clearing out some old paperwork today and have a number of share certificates that I don't think are valid any longer.
I know that I should have disposed of them when I undoubtedly received some kind of correspondence relating to these companies years ago, but I am a dreadful hoarder and always think it is worth keeping things just in case:o
I have been searching online to try and find out if it is 100% safe to throw these certificates out, but can't seem to find information on some of the companies.
Just wondered if anyone on here knows of a website that would list old companies that may have either changed their name or gone bust.
Thanks.

You could try google! Search for something like "HBOS shares" or "Ferranti shares." The latter led me to the link below which might be the list you require.
