Serving member facing an IVA

Hi there I'm a serving member of the Forces and after surrendering my property leaving me with a massive shortfall I'm facing either a DMP or an IVA.

Will this have any affect on my career and do I have to declare this?

Many thanks.

Im outside now but yes. You should declare it. Do you have any security clearance? You may find its not as big an issue as you think. Its how you are dealing with the problem. What actions caused it etc.

The main issue with debt is the ability to be blackmailed, or be opened up to bribery. An IVA should not be mentioned on any write ups and if its not affected your work and has been caused by unforseen circumstances then no. You could argue that it will help you better understand the problems that members of your division may face in the future.

Put yourself a few years ahead. You have an individual pushing for promotion, ready in all respects, approaches you with a problem. Explains the situation, avenues they have sought and help they are getting. Or the same above but you find out from other sources and find the individual has been hiding the problem and burying their head in the sand. Which would you prefer. Who shows the most maturity to facing the problem.

If you have concerns speak with the chaplain or any service charity first. You are not the first and wont be the last.
As mentioned if you have any security clearance then definately declare otherwise that could seriously come back to bite you though. Going back to the first line, by declaring a problem you take away the ability to be blackmailed as your employer knows anyway.

  • Hi thanks for your help i'm going into speak with the Chaplain tomorrow and have a good chat about everything.
  • If your role involves DV clearance then you may lose it...

You can remain SC with an IVA or bankrupcy but you should keep your chain informed - best they hear it from you than someone else...

I have know people with DV on an IVA. I think mainly because it was declared. Its when its suddenly dicovered it becomes a problem.

i had an IVA in 2004 and went through the 10 years check for SC and then onto DV, i declared everything, never had an issue and have always been promoted rather quickly too. Hiding it would look worse
