Was boiler guy talking rubbish?

Hi,

I got a new boiler installed a few weeks ago and it kept losing the flame and going to standby after about eight minutes. Boiler guy came yesterday and suggested it was because I wasn't working the boiler hard enough. I have four radiators in a small house, and the max that are usually on are three of them, but the boiler itself is set to ''energy efficient'' and the individual radiators are all at a maximum setting of three, they can go up to five. He says I need to have all the radiators set to maximum as well as the boiler, but even then it may still cut off from time to time. It sounded a bit strange to me. My boiler is a Logic + Combi 24 and cost my landlord over 2k to install, so I believe it's fairly top of the range. Was this guy talking nonsense?

    Did your radiators remain hot?
i.e is it causing you a heating problem?

I don't know if they remained hot. When it went in to standby I would just wait for the boiler to go silent and then flick the heat back on. But the boiler guy said it's to do with it... something or other, I can't remember, reaching a certain heat, and the boiler will come back on by itself. But I don't know how ling it would be before it decided to come on again by itself, and if the heat would remain in that time. The rads are all perfectly hot though, even when set on 3.

Uh, silly question, but have you tried waiting?

You don't seem to be suggesting the pilot light is going out or anything. If you have a small insulated house then it isn't going to be on continually.

If the rads are hot, it's clearly doing its job. Is there a room stat as well or just TRVs?

Nada, the light does go out, and it says it's going to standby. I haven't tried waiting to see if it comes back on, but I will.

Biggles, there is a room stat, if you mean the small battery-powered thing that tells you the temp in the room, that you can use to operate the boiler with and such?

Regardless of any other issue, then yes the RGI is apparently talking nonsense. The boiler should still operate without being on maximum temp, as should the TRV's. It will cut out as soon as the zone reaches the pre-set temp on the room 'stat-is it reaching that temp?
If still a problem then get then ask your LL to get Ideal out under the warranty to fix it-assuming it's been registered and installed to the manufacturer's spec.

Well, I set the room stat to 30 degrees but it's cutting out at 13.

I waited and it did come back on, but only for a few minutes. But that is with me using only the one boiler, as I was in my bedroom and was going to be for several more hours. Haven't seen if it comes back on and stays on with three rads on yet.

Just seemed a bit daft that he was saying he recommended having the boiler on max and all the rads too. Obviously it's going to cost me more, without it being significantly warmer. My old boiler, which was very old, was able to stay on at low settings too, so surely a brand new one that cost over 2k should?

I don't want to get Ideal out yet, as according to people that installed my boiler Ideal prefer the initial installer to go out first, and seeing as they've done very little so far other than tell me to use the thermostat and turn up the rads, I still think they have work to do.

Or, I don't know, am I being unreasonable expecting my boiler to be able to deal with running just the one radiator not at maximum temperature without cutting out?

Does it work OK if all the radiators are on and the thermostat is set at 30 degrees C?

I have the same boiler, when the room stat calls for heat the boiler fires up and the temperature reading on it builds up to 75 degrees in economy mode.

Then you can hear the boiler slow down as it keeps the radiators at 75 degrees, it doesn't go to standby.

When the room required temperature is reached the boiler flame goes out and the boiler shuts off after a few minutes.

You don't have thermostatic valves on all the rads do you?

A gas boiler will only go to standby if there is an issue with it or the system. It's a safety measure, not normal operation.
