  • I agree with tomtontom about Beeston. I think it would be too far also. My friend lives in Gedling and works at IKEA. He leaves for work quite early mind but gets there within the half hour.
  • Horseygirl-what are the boundaries for Mapperley-is it north of 'Woodborough Road' or is the area down by 'The Wells Road' towards Thorneywood included?

Mapperley covers quite an area starting from where Mapperley Park finishes. The area isn't very inspiring from there up along Woodborough Road (Wells Road etc). I always think it really improves once you pass Porchester Road and get onto what we call Mapperley Plains.

I don't really like Thorneywood (too near St Ann's for my liking).

Sherwood is nice and good for bus route into town.

I would look at Sherwood. Lots of things going on there such as an Arts Festival in June. Very vibrant and quite friendly. Quite a community feel. Close to city as well, about 30 mins walk.
Lots of community events and chances to meet people in Sherwood. It seems to currently attract lots of young professionals but there is still a mix of people.
If you have the chance I would suggest spending a couple of days in Nottingham and going to the shopping areas of these areas as you should get a feel of the vibe. Mapperley and sherwood are about 5-10 minutes drive away from each other so you could do both of them in a couple of hours

Oh and another thing. The traffic on Woodborough Road/Mapperley plains can be quite bad and they are planning to build 900 new homes nearby with an access road that will feed onto Mapperley Plains. So if you're planning to stay there for several years, the traffic will get worse.

Personally I've had enough of Mapperley. I cannot believe how it has changed so much since 1980. Traffic is terrible and the house building seems never ending which causes even more traffic jams.
  • Ooh lots of food for thought now, thank you.
I have been for a little drive around these places (except Sherwood-next on the list maybe!), but not done the shopping thing-good idea, thanks.

Don't worry, I'm under no illusions that unless I live on the doorstep of my workplace I'm still going to have a bit of a journey-a colleague lives in Kimberley and sometimes takes her longer than me to get into work! (We are the Nottingham side of J26, GaleSF63). But distance plays a part as well as time for me anyway, as well as being able to take alternative routes if there was an unexpected road closure for example - once you're on that motorway and they close it in front of you you can't just turn round and go back! (Ok, so that doesn't happen often, but I have spent 6hours before now stuck on the M1!).

I hope to only rent for 6months ish anyway to get a feel for the city before buying again...there or back in Sheffield depending! So not the end of the world if I don't get the area right first time, but as I said before having never lived alone I need to be sure I'm in a decent enough area to feel safe.
