Electricity Surges or Coincidence? Anybody handy with electrics please advise!

We've had two failures of heat-based appliances in just under a month.
First I left some straighteners plugged in (not on - just plugged in) and when I returned to them the fuse had gone.
Today I have come home and the plug of our portable heater (also plugged in but not switched on) seems to have become welded in the socket.
Could these two things be coincidences or could we be suffering from surges?
Both of these appliances were plugged into extension leads if this is relevant but they are not overloaded (no two heat-based appliances are ever connected to the same socket at the same time as I know how power hungry they are).
Any help appreciated as I'm not very clued up and at this rate will leave nothing plugged in!

I'm no expert but do you have a consumer unit or fuse box? It sounds like the curcuits have too many spurs off them and have become overloaded.

When I was working I was at different times an electrician/ maintenance man. You would not believe the number of times that people came to the workshop and said. "When I did this, that happened".
Almost every time the two occurrences were completely unconnected, and what had happened was a pure coincidence.I can afford anything that I want.

once is an accident twice is a coincidence three times is a pattern.Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

Turn the power off and check the wire terminals to the back of socket are tight. If the plug has welded to the socket this sounds like a loose connection. You will now have to change the socket as well to be safe0
