Summer Holiday - Suggestions?

Two weeks (end July / first week August)

Two adults - for a change!

Budget £4k'ish

So many places but thought I'd ask for peoples ideas - we don't usually travel abroad during the summer but fancy a change this year. My mrs wants a beach type break, I'd prefer city / beach combo if we can. :D

    Short vs long haul?

    Barcelona for short.
Med Cruise where you can pick and choose.

2 weeks, long haul......the world is your oyster!

I think people who come here looking for holiday ideas, should possibly play "pin the tail" on world map globe, wherever you pin, you go???!!!! Just throwing it out there!

Have a FAB holiday whatever you choose.

I'm a massive fan of Turkey but it may be too hot at the time you want to go. There's' plenty of sightseeing in terms of historical sights to mix with the sun/sand type holidays.

Alternatives for me would be Italy or France for city sightseeing but not sure about beaches. We've had many fantastic holidays in France where we've rented villas with pools and then gone sightseeing from there.

As already suggested Barcelona is a good bet, have a few days in the city before heading off to relax in one of the coastal resorts (Sitges, Salou, Cambrils, Tossa de Mar are all within an hour of so of Barcelona).

Italy is another good option for combining both. Venice is a good choice with the airport just a short distance from the city centre, and then plenty of resorts along the coast. Lido di Jeselo is the biggest and is about 45mins away, but Caorle is also quite nice. If you stay in Lido you can easily get to Murano, a smaller island famed for it's glass and Burano which is worth a visit. Alternatively head towards Milan and then on to Lake Como, fabulous scenery, and you can then take day trips over to Switzerland. Lake Garda also has plenty to see and do, and could be combined with a few days in Verona. The southern area of Lake Garda is around 1.5hrs from Milan, Venice and Parma so again plenty of choices there.

We love cambrils near Barcelona and think it has so many positives including short transfers, brilliant beaches, nice traditional town and harbour with excellent food and drink.

This year we're trying a beach resort on the lisbon coast and hope it's as good!

You may need to check the weather on that one, it will be 'off season' in the Maldives.

Most of the long haul places we've been looking at are either hurricane season, wet season or similar - with the exception of the West Coast USA locations we've considered.

Northern Australia? Good time to go there. Though maybe too far for 2 weeks.

Yep, bit too far for us. If we had longer would consider it :)
