Arrangement to Pay showing on Barclaycard

After reading all these forums I joined up to Equifax and regularly check my credit/payments on line. I am up to date with all payments etc. However I was shocked last month to find an Arrangement to Pay on a Barclaycard suddenly showing. It shows up to date payments for about 4 years but now shows 2 arrangment to pay (June and July). I queried this with Equifax who got on to Barclaycard who said it was an account in 1996 with last payment being 1998 (so why do they show payments for 2007/06/05/04/03? I have asked for details of who to contact in Barlcaycard to sort this out as I don't believe I had an account. Can anybody offer me an advice as Equifax sent me an alert to say there was a default notice now showing re this. Why have Barlcaycard suddenly put this on my credit record if last payment was 1998?
Sorry to ramble but I am only just getting my head around the workings of the financial institutions etc. Even more worrying today I suddenly out of the blue got a reduction on a credit limit from Goldfish (I have recently paid off a large sum to them). Is this as a result of Barclaycard.
Once again sorry for this mad ramblings!

perhaps it wasnt settled properly, did you remember getting a letter to say the account was closed?
maybe there was a little amount which was not paid off and thats what the arrangment means?
best to phone up and get it sorted as this does damage your credit record until its taken off.0
