This is our first bill for this time period as we are new home owners but our winter bills were much much less!

The only reason I can think of for this would be an immersion heater for hot water, which wouldn't be used in the winter.

Do you have a combi boiler, or is it a conventional one with a hot water cylinder (usually in the airing cupboard)?

Or, if this is a (partially) estimated bill, might there have been a H/W cylinder with immerciaon heater in the property before?
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

do you have an emerssion heater?

I was running up a lot of electric a few months ago and could not think why it was so high. Turns out someone had turned ont the emerssion heater switch which is in a cupboard out of sight. Usually we use our gas to heat water but for some reason this was switched on.

If not it could be a fault appliance. You can get readers that go between your plug and appliance and tell you how much jucie they are sucking. Check out maplin.co.uk for them

Our last quarter bill was £45 and we use a tumble dryer to dry all our clothes - winter was less than £70. Two adults and a 16 month old in a two bed terraced house.

I suggest you turn everything you can think of off and see what the meter is doing.
