Round the world insurance

I'm going on a RTW trip leaving the end of May and I'm trying to get my travel insurance sorted. I was wondering if any RTW backpackers had any recommendations for insurance companies? I think customer service is going to be the key to my purchase as opposed to price because I want to be able to easily process any claims when I'm stuck in a foreign country :(

Any suggestions please, there are so many!

If you've already booked your flights it's as important to get it done quickly, the time to ask the question (and act on the answers) is before you book anything.

I used Endsleigh when I travelled for 4 months in SE Asia but I can't comment on claim handling while away as I did have a medical claim but I made it when I returned.

I used insure and go on my last RTW trip, they were really good for medical emergency cases and reclaiming medical expenses, (for 3 months in a row I had burst ovarian cysts), requiring visits to Australian doctors, A&E and medication costs. I was able to fax everything across and they were quick to process the claim while I was still in Oz.

Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada

I used virgin travel. Very good level of cover on all the fun things backpackers do. Also covered cruises which was important for me going down the amazon. You must read the what is covered policy before booking, and I dont recommend the lowest policy level when buying backpacker insurance. Fine for a week in spain but when everything goes wrong in the middle of nowhere (which hopefully it never will) they will be in a much better position to help you. Enjoy the travels.

    Thanks everyone.

Realistically for the average person what level of cover would I need? I don't want to pay the earth for the best cover. I don't mind paying a small excess but I also don't want over the top cover.

I paid £144 for my 4 months cover in 2008, but that didn't include USA.
