Equifax scam!

Options
Hi,

Just a quick vent to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar to my current situation.

I signed up online for Equifax's 30 day free trial on 29th December. I phoned to cancel it on 15th January and received confirmation emails to that effect.

I have just checked through my accounts and found I was charged £14.95 on the 30th January and again on 02nd March.

I called Equifax to advise of this, they confirmed that the account was closed on 15th Jan, and told me to use their online customer services to upload bank statements.

I did this.

I have just had a response back from them saying that these charges were not against my (Equifax) account, did I give permission for anyone else to use my card, and if not, then I should seek a chargeback via my bank.

I think it seems pretty suspect. I signed up and then 31 days later (immediately after the free trial) I'm charged and they are trying to say that it was someone else accessing my account. Bit of a stretch as whoever accessed my account would have had to sign up on the exact same day that I did!

Anyone else think this is strange?

Yeah that sounds really strange. Have you learned anything new since you started the thread?

What is the exact wording used to describe those charges on your bank statements?

Spoke to bank today. They are doing a chargeback for the payments. They said they will contact Equifax, and may require further details.

maninthestreet - how do you mean exact wording? They are just listed as Equifax Ltd.

    Yeah, bunch of shysters.

Can't remember the exact details but I was after the £2 credit report. The gave me an option along the lines of "would I rather receive this report online" so I clicked OK. It took me through a series of screens and only at the very end did it announce that I'd just signed up for the Gold programme and been charged £70. Absolutely no mention of that along the way at all.

Managed to get my money back (and the report for free!) but took a couple of phone calls.

They've updated the initial query today.
As my colleague has previously mentioned the charges applied to your card do not relate to a membership within your own name. Although I can't discuss details relating to a third party I can confirm these charges do relate to a membership for your address. We there for do not believe these to be fraudulent. We would ask that you speak to members of your household to check if they've used your card for their Equifax subscription.

Utter tosh. The only people that have access to my account are myself and my wife. She's definitely not signed up for Equifax so they are clearly pulling a fast one!

I would be inclined to point out that if the "charges applied to your card do not relate to a membership within your own name" then you confirm to Equifax that you have not authorised anyone else to charge their membership to your card, and that therefore you will be requesting a chargeback from your bank.
