Is rabbit insurance a waste of money?

Thanks RuthnJasper, that's very kind.
A bill of around £600, I think I'd just use an interest free credit card to cover whatever I couldn't pay immediately. Though, as rising from the ashes says, I would have to way up how successful any treatment is likely to be and the amount of stress it would cause him. But I would hope the vet would be able to advise me on that if the situation ever occurred. He seems very happy and healthy at the minute
You're right. Vets, like doctors, have a duty of care towards their patients and are accountable to the RCVS. Despite the claims of the ignorant, vets are not "in it for the money". Veterinary practice is frequently hard, at antisocial hours, and often distressing.
But I digress. My point is that a vet will not give you false hope or try to hoodwink you if your rabbit is so poorly that a PTS is the kindest cure. They may discuss various options, so you can make an informed decision, but they WILL be honest if the rabbit is in extremis. Their first priority is the animal and not the owner. And never be afraid to ask - no question is too "stupid".
I wish more people were as sensible about responsible animal care as you clearly are!
Best wishes to you and the bun, xx0 -
I have 5 rabbits right now, and had 5 before them, never had a broken bone or a large vet bill for any of them, so I don't insure. Largest bill I have had for any of them has been routine neuters/spays which isn't covered anyway.
Saying that, having been a part of Rabbits United forum for many years, I have seen a lot of people with huge vet bills, so it really does depend on the bunny. I wouldn't say its a waste, but as the same time, something not really essential unless you couldn't afford a bill should it come up.I just enter and forget...hoping to win something!
