Amazon return seems to have gotten lost by Royal Mail, they want me to wait 3 weeks!

I returned a expensive item costing £600 due to being faulty, I had to take it to local post office and it was sent back last Thursday morning, but the tracking has not updated and it was meant to be a 48 hour service.
Amazon just tell me I cant claim under it being lost for 10 business days and then it takes up to 10 more business days for a refund which I think is terrible as that will be a month after I returned it they just tell me that not to worry it will be refunded eventually.
Meanwhile I am out of pocket £600 and have no guarantee I will get a refund.
Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

no.
For the sake of the character count, their request is not unreasonable.0 -

If you had sold someone something for £600 would you issue a refund before it has been received and with no tracking updates?
Any time I have returned something via Royal Mail to Amazon as far as I'm aware the label hasn't stated what service would be used.0 -
Custardy is far more knowledgeable about Royal Mail, but they do have a timescale before an item is classified as being "lost". It isn't unreasonable that Amazon will wait until this time has passed before they will issue a refund. The further wait, in part, is due to the time that it takes for the refund to clear from Amazon's bank to yours. It might be a pain, and is the downside of online shopping, but it really isn't unreasonable. Amazon are usually very good at dealing with returned items and problems that may arise, but the loss of your item isn't directly their fault. Had you asked for a replacement then they would have sent that immediately, before the original had even been returned - I had to do this twice where they had a manufacturer acknowledged faulty consignment and it was painless and excellent service.0

I have had one go missing back to amazon via royal mail , because or the nature of the return , I rung them and the provided an instant refund , on the basis that they got it back within 2 or 4 weeks , cant remember , I printed there labels (Falkirk I think) and posted , after a few weeks they started chasing me , I emailed them the po proof of posting , job done.
told them , they were the PO customer , not me as they had provided labels ,0
