Don't worry. I got permission to take it. Also, I erase the drives or destroy them if they're faulty/obsolete.

Erasing it never removes it completely. If you know how and have the equipment, that data is still there and can be found.
As for scrap, selling it can't be illegal. The place buying it must follow procedures though and not pay cash. Seller needs ID. If a license was required on my part, they'd have asked for one as I take it to a legit metal recycling company.

I did a quick search search yesterday and there's a few stories from a 2 or 3 years back about a ban and the scrap metal industry suffering. But whether it's only certain areas or whether it's completely illegal or you need a licence I don't know. Also I don't know whether that ban has ended or not. Not even sure whether the ban was/is on cash only or any form payment.

I don't know much about that industry, but can't see why they would ban it or say cash isn't allowed so long as it's all done properly. Seems pointless. It causes problems for legit companies, has put some people out of a job, there's surely still as much scrap metal which is now who knows where when previously it would have been recycled and anyone doing anything illegal before is no doubt still doing illegal things.

I know. Low level and then a reinstall of the OS is better than just a normal format / delete. I'm guessing only government/police would have equipment to recover from that. I normally just do one pass. Sometimes 2.

And as you say, maybe the ban was just with cash payments. If my car was written off and I want to sell it for scrap, I should be entitled to, just as when I have random scrap cable, etc provided they're not nicked.

Hopefully, but doubtful. Although I imagine very few would such equipment but you never know what people can get hold of or even build themselves. I should think the chances are very very small of selling to a person who happens to have such equipment but I bet the number of people who do have equipment is higher than you'd think.

    Yeah, exactly.

I mean, in that sense it's no different to trading in/selling a game, DVD, a mobile or anything like that. You can get cash then and they can get recycled. Why is scrap different? Nothing really to stop people stealing them things and selling them to companies for cash so if that's the reason for scrap (for cash) being banned it makes no sense.

Would that be hardware or software? I have some data recovery software but not 100% guaranteed and like to try new things. (I sometimes help people recover data, etc). Just curious. After that, back on topic. :D

I suppose it could be either...or both lol. Give it a try lol. I'm no expert in the actual recovery, I have still have a slightly fried external harddrive (used the wrong cable to plug it in) from a few years back that has files on I want to recover :( Although that is slightly different from one that's been erased. I've just read/heard about things like that. I know a fair bit about computers but never tried to recover anything from a drive that's been erased.

I've recovered stuff from formatted drives, deleted files, corrupted files successfully but also many times it's failed and not found stuff...wouldn't mind a new reliable tool. Ah well. Will google and see what I find or apply for a job with the Police (technical forensics team.)

I'd like to see that police interview.

"And why do you want this job?
Well, I'd like to try hacking a few harddrives for fun, see what I can find."

    :rotfl:

I don't think anything is 100% reliable. Certainly not as far as software online goes. But just give 'em all a try lol. You might find using a couple of programs that they find all files between them.
