Spain - baby gate for spiral staircase

Staying in friends appt. Its got a very steep spiral staircase so we dont want our 2 yr old near it!
Its just metal rails either side so no wall to put babygate. Any ideas at all what we can use?
Something like a bungey cord attached sheet would do it I guess. Does such a thing exist?
Failing that we're probably going to have to concoct something.....
