For somewhere like Paris, train and Eurostar would be a better option than flying. CDG (the main airport serving Paris) is a nightmare, and it takes a good hour to get there from the city centre. The airport that Ryanair use is even further out... and of course airport transfers are not exactly free.

OTOH if you want to get there as cheaply as possible and don't care about a long journey, bus (Eurolines) would work out a good deal cheaper than driving yourself.

Personally, the thought of taking a car anywhere inside the Peripherique (Paris Ring Road) fills me with the utmost dread.

I worked in Paris for 4 years, and lived just outside the Peripherique in a charming little town called Le Vesinet.

In that 4 years I drove on the Peripherique twice, and not once within in. The RER and Paris Metro were fine for me.

    Complete nutters!

I agree about the Eurostar, far more convenient than flying.

Definitely Eurostar for Paris. It's only a 10 minute walk from Euston, where the Birmingham train arrives, to St Pancras where the Eurostar leaves from. And you arrive right into the middle of Paris at the other end where you can get on the Metro to your destination without having to worry about transfers in from the airport.

School level French was good enough for buying a book of Metro tickets which could be used to travel around thereafter.
