Hi,
I am new to MSE so I hope my post makes sense!
My story is that I accrued a substantial amount of debt in my younger years which culminated in a debt repayment plan in 2010. Then in 2013 I inherited an amount of money which enabled me to pay off all of my debts with the help of payplan.
During my worst financial times, following my divorce (some debts were accrued by my ex in my name) I was most definitely in severe financial hardship. Even whilst paying my DMP I struggled to stay above water.
Throughout my struggle I developed a resentment of financial institutions and now that I am solvent, I want to reclaim all that is mine. I recently got £5000 in mis-sold ppi and now I want to move onto reclaiming bank charges.
My current account was with Barclays and I accrued many charges over my time with them, when I entered my DMP I stopped using the account and it was £1700 overdrawn. The account shows up as a default on my credit report and I am challenging this with Barclays to get it removed as the same account shows as settled in my closed accounts on the report.
So my question is - do I have a fair chance of reclaiming my bank charges based on historical and not current hardship?
My view is that Barclays compounded my struggle with debt at the time by piling on charges and caused me a great deal of emotional torment (my mental health suffered).
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You missed that boat.So my question is - do I have a fair chance of reclaiming my bank charges based on historical and not current hardship?
Banks look at your current position. if you meet current financial hardship then they start to look backwards. However, if you are not in current financial hardship, you will fail bar a token goodwill gesture.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
