Do defaults dissappear off credit file if the accounts are still open?

I have just checked my credit report on noddle and found I have two defaults from 2009. It looks like the accounts are still open on them and I dont have the details to close the accounts. They are due to dissapear this year but will they still dissapear if the accounts are still open. It shows red dots all the way up till 2014.
Also there were no ccjs listed, if there are none listed on noddle does this mean there is non listed on equafax, experien etc,
Hope someone can help I am desperate to improve my credit score so I can move house.

Defaulted accounts drop off 6 years from the first default date no matter what. No exceptions.

Noddle/callcredit, Equifax and Experian all get their CCJ data sent to them from the same source, so as long as you have given correct previous address details etc, all 3 should show the same. Or lack thereof. Mistakes notwithstanding.

  • Thankyou very much for the quick reply, that makes me feel a lot better.
  • With regards to fiasco1's original question, I'm 3 years into my 6 and would be interested to know what actually happens to the account balances outstanding because I've heard so many different stories? @fermi can you confirm please?

It is worth remembering that just because the defaults drop off your file it does not mean that the money is not still owed or that it cannot be enforced. There is a six year time period under the Limitation Act 1980 but that is not necessarily linked to your default date.

    Hi Paul,

I have had a default from 2009 from Lowel - due to drop off this year may.
Are you saying Lowel can still enforce it? I dont even know what the debt is for - my boyfriend then - ran up ALL my credit cards, no job, no money and been a single mum - I just abandoned it all (stupid, yes I agree... but i had to feed a baby and I was naive and young..)

Just wanted to know - if after May 2015 - Lowel cld still enforce it.

I cant afford much now ..

They would be able to enforce the debt if they could prove you have admitted liability for it and made any payments towards it in the previous six years. After six years of not acknowledging the debt or making payments towards it the debt could become statute barred and unenforceable.

This does not mean that you still do not owe the money of course. Unfortunately the law does not differentiate between you spending the money and your boyfriend as the credit card was in your name and you are responsible for it. A hard lesson to learn.

    Good luck.

Again SolentSusie - THANK YOU so much.

Well - i abandoned it all - could not afford to pay any of the credit card bills or etc.

I was in so MUCH debt - i was about to loose my council home and council tax debt - so that was my main focus.

I didnt pay anything back for the last 8yrs...

I was shocked - as I expected a credit card bill to be on my file - but it was not.

Whilst - i know its irresponsible - i had to make difficult choices and I paid the price.

    8yrs - not a credit card / loan / car finance / etc

Lowell are like many debt purchase firms, very good at telling you things that are not true. I'd think that if you sit tight you will be fine with this one and if they contact you, do not admit to owing any money and do not make any payments, not even a token £1 as that could reset the six year clock.
