We're not going to be doing much for Christmas. It's pretty much all organised now. I'm just trying to put up the tree, but have discovered that the tree stand is too narrow for the tree... so I guess I need to go out and try to track down a new one!

The stand for our Christmas tree wasn't very stable so DH drilled a hole in a good sized log and we've been using that for years - very stable now!

Very sensible idea. I managed to get a stand which seems very effective despite my failure to recut the trunk straight. The tree looks straight and it has a decent reservoir for water so hopefully it'll still have needles on by Christmas!

I also got more lights and have managed to run the cabling under rugs - but when the downstairs electrics are done I'll make sure I have sockets in reach. They'll be useful for other things too.

My goodness, burtha! I hope you feel appreciated by the folks you do do much for!

Just seen the train fare to cornwall from where we are staying for Xmas...I'm not paying that.
  • Got discounted flights from manchester and a lift as far as that. It was less than a third of the direct train fare. I could have done it via London, 6 changes, for quite a lot less but still more than by air and taking 8 1/2 hours.
Do you think the train companies are being run by fools?

LOL - my OH is fairly high up in a national rail company and he can be a fool :D

I don't pay for my rail fare as it is a perk of the job that we get free 1st class rail travel, but he would agree that the prices are ridiculous.

You can get some good deals if you book very early, but it isn't always possible is it?
I wanna be in the room where it happens
  • So I had two of the DGD's today, DD's car wouldn't start so I collected them at 8:30 , dropped DD at work, came home, picked up my L&M and took him to work. The DGD & I made a depression cake and OD'd on pritt stick and glitter this morning, the 5yo really isn't well and slept on the sofa for a while after lunch, the 2yo had a nap at the same time so I managed to make some chicken soup, prepped a roast dinner for my L&M and I and cooked a beef casserole for tomorrow's meal..
I collected DD from work at 3 and took them all home, then I did a Christmas shop for a neighbour who couldn't manage it, got the car washed, collected my L&M and now I'm shortening a pair of trousers, well it gives me an excuse to sit down for half an hour!
    Chin up, Titus out.

Hester, I think the only way you'd get your bum on a seat more often is if you glued one to it as you went on with daily life... I hope Christmas has some form of rest for you in there somewhere.

I'm pooped (and I haven't even done any Hestering).

A good easy recipe to share:
    marinated mushrooms asian style

Slice some mushrooms, pour on some cheap olive oil, soy sauce and a squeeze of lemon. Stir a few times over 10 mins, then leave an hour. Strain off liquid and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Great as antipasto or on salad.

I made it at the weekend and people were asking how I'd done it. It's adapted from a posh raw vegan recipe without the odd other ingredients (agave syrup....!!!!!!??).

Hester, your activity rate amazes me! I can't do half of that, and I've been away from paid work for some time.... I really don't know where you find your energy & stamina.
