  • Thanks all - it's beginning to look like it will be composite stone worktop in that kitchen then. Are there any potential problems with that? (ie now we've established I'm not a fan of housework and I do like things to keep looking good).

My last kitchen (a flat pack one put in by my father) and current kitchen in this house both have stainless steel sinks. That meaning there has been/is sealant round the edges of the sink where it joins the laminate worktops. That takes about two seconds flat to look blimmin' awful in any kitchen I'm using (yep...the sealant has already gone missing and/or looking grotty in this one since I moved in).

Add that I want a double-drainer sink - and I suspect the only way to get that these days is to have "carved out" draining board in a composite stone worksurface.

I'm thinking more mottled grey sort of colour - than black.

Twas in when we bought, not my choice, although when we redid the other bathroom in 2011 we did dither between glass and white porcelain bowl as basin on top of the freestanding cupboard :) We went with the white :D

This is my dream sink/drainer/worktop combination. I haven't ever priced it for my kitchen as what I have is very workable at the moment but I guess it will be at the higher end of my budget. However I would rather pay out on something like that and save cash elsewhere.

I have a 1 1/2 bowl sink and drainer at the mo. Now there's just the two of us,with a dishwasher and a decent deep sink in the utility I'll probably go for a single bowl and drainer which will give me more work space. I like the look of beech block but not the upkeep so it will probably be laminate lookalike!
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Yes. I like that:T. I'll keep a record of that.
  • Laminate all the way for me, easy care all the way.

I had bamboo in the last kitchen, which I loved. This one will probably be granite as most of th kitchens my friend removes have it.

I like the look of it.

Is it the pain to look after though that beech worktops are?

Second question re kitchens. I want an electric hob for the cooker and tossing up re ceramic (which is what is on current freestanding cooker) or induction and wondering what proportion of each are sold.

    Re induction hobs:
    1. Would I need new saucepans? Mine are fine basically - and they are all stainless steel.

    2. Some while back I read something to do with them being a health hazard for some reason - but can't remember the details of how/why. Has anyone any info. one way or the other as to whether they are or arent health hazardous?

My new kitchen will have oak worktops, I had them in the last house and loved them. They only needed a light sanding and oiling every 9 months or so, easy to wipe down and always looked fab.

The kitchen door here has been boarded up, there is brick dust everywhere as a wall has been knocked down and the plaster cut for all the new sockets, etc. Not very OS I know but I have used a packet of flash wipes to give everything the once over.

There is woodworm in the floorboards so that means a new floor and treatment to stop it spreading to the uprights, this thing has grown arms and legs already!
