    Hello avstar

I've been to Philadelphia and felt safe walking around the city and visiting tourist spots. There is a post I made about my trip in the following thread:
Philadelphia Help required for the single traveller

    Enjoy your holiday

    Regards

Also, Florida isn't really considered a southern state in terms of culture, it's completely different.

OOOHHH ! don't say that to a true Floridian, we have friends out there and they consider themselves to be TRUE southerners - the Civil War hasn't ended yet !

Although I must agree that parts of Miami are more like Havana - except a lot more expensive.

North Philly and North Las Vegas are the no-go areas. Although there are many dark corners in Las Vegas!!

only off the strip. to quote Ferf you could walk around with $50 notes pinned to your jacket in the south and center strip and feel safe .

Naked City ( the bit between the Strat and Freemont street) looks a bit grim at night. as do the areas as you leave Freemont street. but are probably not nearly as bad as walking around any UK town center on a friday night .

    don,t worry have a great time .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
  • a more general warning for other travellers would be that it's far easier to end up somewhere dodgy when you are travelling around in a hire car ...most large towns and cities have areas where you really wouldn't want to be or shouldn't be regardless of the time of day.
in washington dc it used to be the case that turning the wrong way by a block from your nice central hotel could end up with you in serious trouble...it's certainly better now with the higher levels of security ...ditto new york ...manhattan was getting better before 9/11 but since then the police presence is an eye-opener.
i'd feel far safer in the tourist areas of NY than london and also on the subway compared to the tube.
if you're just doing the touristy things you'll have a great ,safe time
  • NY City safer then Liverpool and London. I loved it there.

My fiancee lives in Kentucky. Really safe there. The waitresses love my accent.

Note that the USA is very varied, in terms of security as in other respects. And Philadelphia is NOT New York: parts of Phily are extremely grim! (The area around the main bus station in town is really rather scarey.) However, the tourist areas are really safe. So no need to worry, but unless you are 100 per cent sure that you won't lose your way, don't use a hired car there.

Las Vegas: if you go looking for trouble you will find it, but if not you will be fine. I found the casinos rather boring, but at least you get free drinks. And there is a guaranteed way to break even: be sure you only play the change machine.

Thanks everyone for the reassuring comments

I feel much better about the whole thing, I'll just put on my posh'est English accent - being from Yorkshire they prob won't understand a word I'm saying tha knows !

Its a shame that parts of US are still unfriendly to mixed couples, but I knew that the southern states are a no-no for us. Makes me laugh thats its OK cos we are English tho !

I visit London a lot with work and I'm on my guard, so I suppose it's just like that.

Yes we'll only be doing the tourist things in Philadelphia because we're only there for 2 full days so won't be straying off the beaten track. And I suupose our every move in Las vegas will be on camera which is spooky but strangley comforting !

Ah,hang on a minute - you didn't say in your original post you were an ecky thump.
    That changes things completely.
For a start, they don't have whippet racing over there and you're no going to get far if you only take £3.50 with you for the entire holiday.
However,I'd say Philadelphia is a breeze compared to Barnsley on a Saturday night.
    'appen.

I was once told by an American that she'd seen some British show called "Last of the Summer Wine" on BBC America and she had to put on subtitles because she couldn't understand a word they were saying :rotfl: That kept me chuckling for hours!

Uh, gotta luv those yanks! Seems that everying non-American is foreign to them, they even thought I was British, even though - for most native English 'speaking' ears plain to hear - my accent is distinctively un-British! :p
