Last car I bought was last September, before the new rules came in. It was untaxed, so I drove it half a mile to a car park, walked 10 minutes to a Post Office to get it taxed, and the disc was in the car 30 minutes after purchase. Technically, I broke the law, and I am still waiting for the 4 am knock on the door.

I, too, like to live dangerously.

Us the 12 digit reference number on your New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) if you've just bought the vehicle.

Problem is as soon as the DVLA are notified about the change of keeper the tax will be refunded (or not if they've just paid for the one month) and will need taking again anyway

Not if the reference on the new keeper supplement is used, rather than the main document reference.

Way back in 1983 I drove my newly restored MGA down to the Market Place in Newbury in order to tax it at the Post Office [it had been off the road for about 7 years]. A policemen immediately strolled over and I started to explain that I was on my way to tax it but it turned out that he was only interested in the car itself ...those were the days.

I had exactly the same experience the day after I passed my driving test. I'd already been pulled over in my restored 1967 Triumph Herald on the way to school (I was taking it to an MOT at the garage near the school - a journey of 22 miles) because I had no tax disc (and no MOT, as I admitted).

I then picked up the car after school with its new MOT certificate (ah, the old embossed A5 certificates, how I miss them) and drove to the town centre to get it taxed at the PO. Parked outside the police station because that was the nearest place, and had two bobbies on their way out of the station come over, interest piqued by my car (and the fact a spotty oik in a school uniform was driving a 25 year old restored classic), not lack of tax disc despite my immediate terror.
