Buyer has now paid for an item they cancelled

Hello,

About a week ago I sold an item. Shortly after the buyer contacted me saying they didn't have the money to pay, so could they cancel the order. I therefore cancelled the order, and received two emails back 'You agreed to cancel an order' followed shortly by 'Order Cancelled'. I took that as confirmation of the cancellation and 2nd chanced the item to someone else.

All fine - until last night. Another item I was selling was won - by the same buyer. Rather than just paying for that item, they've paid for both items.

Obviously there's not much I can do about the fact I don't have the other item, but is there anything I can do to prevent negative feedback in the event the buyer takes objection to this?

Not only that, but eBay has merged the 2 orders into 1 - and the whole order still shows as 'cancelled by the buyer', so not even sure how I'd go about proceeding. Of course I can partial refund the value of the item I can't send, but does this leave me at risk for item not received/described case if I can't attribute the refund to the specific item (only the wider, cancelled, order)?

I had an order cancelled by the seller but it still showed as payment needing to be made on both my ebay and whenever I went to pay for anything on paypal - I would imagine this is the case and your buyer probably doesn't even realise he has paid for it. I would just refund that element to buyer.

Buyer can still leave feedback and if you refund you pay the 20p PayPal fee and in some cases might even get a defect (some people have reported they got a defect after a refund) so be warned.

Surely if a defect appears the seller can phone eBay CS and get it removed?

Not any more, eBay CS won't remove any defect.

It does not make any sense that the buyer can still leave feedback even if you refund the pay.

Actually I think it does make sense.

Imagine otherwise, seller doesn't get what they wanted for an item, or have any reason not to sell to a buyer- if they could just refund and be safe from poor feedback it would be a scammers delight.
