Help with travel documents for Canada to usa by train

In July we are visiting my brother-in-law who lives in Detroit and staying for a month. It is much cheaper to fly to Toronto and get the train down to Detroit. What paperwork will we need for the crossing in each direction? I've tried looking online and I'm confused. Apparently we don't need an Esta - we fill out a green form at the crossing but I'm wondering if it would speed things up if we had one. Amtrak - the train company are suggesting we will need a re-entry permit to get back into Canada.

i went from Montreal to NYC last year via train I took my passport, on the train when they stopped at the border the immigration people boarded and handed out the forms. Filled this in, endured lotsa questions fromn the officers ( including "is that you in passport pic, do you have other id" and "have you got sisters and brothers"
Then told to go dining car- pay $6 and passport was stamped Oh and train doesnt move until everyone cleared
Did not need re entry permit to canada- this thats for US citizens
BTW a short side trip to Toronto and Niagara falls would be nice if you havent visited before0 -
Thanks very much - that's really helpful. We are planning to stay a couple of days in Toronto at each end of our trip. We are also planning a few days in Chicago.0

Ensure that your green form (I94) is collected from you when you leave the US for the final time on your trip. Otherwise, you may appear to be an overstayer, and have problems on your next trip.0
