If both options are the same price, and just as difficult to break, I suppose it's just down to preference? Unless there's anything else to differentiate them?

With the laminate glass, I wonder if there's the possibility of the two laminated panes 'rattling' due to vibrations?

No as the panes are stuck to the polythene membrane. The only issue with laminated is long term you can get moisture ingress between the panes and it can look "milky" white around the edges of the glass.

Perhaps I might opt for the 6mm outer pane then.
or the windows have swollen up and they won't open.
Were those wooden frames? I'd be getting uPVC; or perhaps uPVC frames can swell also?

Yes, I make timber windows , you shouldn't have problems with Upvc regards swelling up, its softwood timber thats prone to it.

Re: 6mm toughened glass, if its a front door I wouldn't bother as any burglar is more likely to look for a side/rear door or window.

    It'd be a rear door.

Do you think this would be an issue with a good quality brand of laminated glass, in particular, Pilkington Optilam Phon?

The other option is 6mm tuff glass (same price as 6.4 laminted) which again is almost impossible to break ,even with a hammer. I recently had some units delivered that had scratches on so I rejected them and the supplier said just throw them in the skip.I tried to break them with a 22oz hammer and gave up in the end.

Is the 6mm tuff glass different, or the same as, 6mm tempered glass?

I ask as I seen this Youtube clip:

If you had 12mm toughened glass it can be broken with masonry nail ,centre punch or anything with small point on the end thats hard. If your looking at purely security wise then laminated glass is the best option because if an intruder breaks the outer pane they can't get through the membrane in the middle without making a lot of noise and taking time.

This is one of the reasons why people should always lock the door at night with a key and remove the key from the door, that way if an intruder does get through the glass with his arm he still can't open the door. BS3621 double locking nightlatches are good because you can double lock the door with they key .

Opportunist Intruders look for weak points in security so they don't know how thick your glass is without hitting it with a hammer, centre punch or how many BS3621 5 lever locks you have,5 point locking espagnolette, security bolt hinges etc etc they will be looking to gain entry though an open window or a window with a poor quality security bolt fitted. If you have a door with 4mm toughened glass, security bolts,5 lever locks etc it will be good enough.

Just to add Possom when you break toughend glass the noise is enough to wake the dead, especially 6mm tuff so no intruder will want to wake up the whole neighbourhood and drawer attention to what they are doing. Using a small bar to break open a window is far easier and quiet.
