Is £250K for a 1 bed flat about right price for West London in traditional terms?

I would in no way describe Putney as a nice area.
How long since you've been there?
Just asking because many areas have been gentrified in recent years.
its simply because regular folk have been priced out of the centre and are forced to the dodgy parts now
When regular folk move into an area, then so do businesses to supply them and the whole area becomes gentrified, so whilst I know what you are saying, many of those areas are becoming less "dodgy".
I wouldn't touch Brixton with a barge pole, but again that is just my opinion, others that like Brixton, have the right to do so.
I went to Brixton last weekend.
It was full of white people drinking processo at artisan cafes.

I don't know how Londoners manage to do any exercise.

~£20 per month for unlimited swimming and gym at my work. Londoners also walk more, even if it's just to the tube/bus, as it's pointless having a car. I've noticed how podgy and lazy people become when they have to drive everywhere.

You're in a fortunate minority to earn a London wage outside the capital.

IMO Putney is a good area, there would be a stampede if that flat was put on the market now for £238k. It looks like ex council, but even so, I think that it was probably a bit of a bargain at the time that it sold (last June), but looking back with the benefit of hindsight makes it look even better value....

I don't think London prices are now any higher than they were last summer. higher than 12 months ago yes, but the summer, nah.
    FACT.

Since when has Putney been a dump? Green space on your doorstep, nice pubs, decent shops (inc Waitrose), occupied by 20s professionals or affluent families, Tory MP. Can't believe it's just been compared to Brixton (aggressive beggars, chavs and Primark featured in my only visit).

That more or less sums up my view, I've always thought that Putney was quite nice, I can't say the same for Brixton though, but I don't really know Brixton that well.

Apparently it's been gentrified, like Hackney. Of course it wasn't that long ago that Notting Hill was a notorious slum area. They can't gentrify the whole city though- the scum have to live somewhere!

I live in a scruffy part of South London, and the estate agents don't even pretend it's up and coming. I get a decent garden though, which was a priority for me.

 thought the median was higher .... i guess my thinking for the post was that there are enough londoners on about 50K to sustain that level at the bottom of the London market indefinately along with BTL/foreign investors and god knows what else!

According to ONS about 30% of full time workers living in inner London earn £50k while in outer London it's some where between 10 and 20%.

They aren't, I totally agree, that's why I said that it was bargain (when it was bought last June) for only £238k, prices rocketed over the last winter/spring and I think that flat someone managed to buy at a very reasonable price. But with the benefit of hindsight it was a bargain. If you don't think so, show me a link to a similar one for sale.

EDIT: If you do find one, there's a drink at least in it for you if I buy it, I'm not in the market, but I wouldn't turn my back on a bargain.

    ... some mistake, surely?

Overheard in an Italian cafe from table of British tourists....

"How about a nice glass of prosciutto? It'll go nicely with the prosecco sandwiches...."

He or she is continually criticising people who choose to live in London.

Not really. You've been telling me just how London is so very important and yet suggest government be moved out to an ex-RAF base.

Some might call that hypocrisy but I prefer to call it the 'London bug'.

yes, we've got trains, electricity and even indoor toilets now
I lived outside London for 46 years so I do know what it's like :-)
Public transport isn't a great option for most people living outside the center of a town.
I don't know how Londoners manage to do any exercise.
I do lots more exercise in London.
There is usually some walking involved when you use tubes and buses and then there's the Boris bikes.
In Wiltshire most people just get in their car which is outside the front door.
I do, however, agree you are all slightly insane
    Why?
The vast majority don't have the extraordinary choice of London wages outside London or even a job.
You can surely see it's impossible for millions of people to try to move out if there aren't millions of jobs available for them to go to.
