Bradfords- expensive or opaque pricing?

A quick comment about a recent experience buying some building materials.
I loaded up then went to pay. Price quoted = £478.80. Seemed a lot, I wondered if there had been a mistake? The guy behind the sales desk said "let me see what I can do" ... tapped on computer... "£240+VAT". I thought that was still too expensive, so I unloaded and went home.
Google took me to another company where I got the same materials for £105, plus delivery £30. It was delivered on a pallet the next day - total cost £135.
I went back to Bradfords website out of curiosity & the price quoted was £299.94 inc VAT.
Make of that what you will. I like this shop and it is convenient, but I'm going to be careful to check prices in future because I nearly ended up £340 out of pocket.
