What is the national average excluding the top 5% of earners though (these are probably millionaires) which increases the average quite alot

Perhaps the average is around only £20k if you exclude the millionarires?

From when a survey was done recently I believe to be in the top 1% of earners you needed to earn around £120k a year.

To the OP, it's an impossible question to answer without knowing where you live and your household arrangement. Someone supporting a family or an out of work partner will obviously need more than a single person or those in a relationship with a working partner.

As for what I consider a good wage (which is a different question) I've always gone along the guideline of your age x1000. So if your 35 I'd consider a good wage £35k a year. I've always used this as a basis for the minimum I should be earning.
