You're right the deposit and the rent are two separate issues. Before going for court action send a Letter Before Action (paper, in the post, good old fashioned snail mail).
Post using special delivery to ensure you get tracking and a signature. Worth the £6 for the proof of delivery.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

If people were calling the police every time they have to wait to get a refund on an overpayment it would be a right mess.
Let's not start suggesting people to waste police time.
It is a criminal offence. http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/s_to_u/sentencing_manual/dishonestly_retaining_a_wrongful_credit/
If the LL refuses to return it, then he's commuting a crime. All crime should be reported.0 -

Reporting a crime? It's fairly easy.0 -
Better to get a free certificate of posting at a PO. First class is considered delivered after two working days with evidence of posting being accepted by courts. If you want to be doubly sure send two letters at different offices with CoPs.bylromarha wrote: »Post using special delivery to ensure you get tracking and a signature.
