Tesco?HP product return

Options
Today I tried to return an HP printer (with receipt) that is only 3 minths old, to tesco's for a refund. I was told that I have to contact the HP technical support first to obtain a returns code. I used the phone at the tech desk wnd after speaking to HP, they said I need to have the printer connected to a laptop/wifi and to ring them back. I explained I couldn't do this as I have moved and have no internet and no phone.HP helpline said they can't do anything and tesco refuse to give me a refund without the authorization code from HP?
Can tesco refuse to give me a refund as requested. I did buy it directly from them, but they say their till/refund system needs an store return code from HP!

  • In a word, yes. But Tesco should be the point of contact, they are the supplier. They can refund, repair or replace, at their discretion. You have no right to an automatic refund.

The obligation is on them, if the item is less than 6 months old.

Is the printer actually faulty, you dont mention it in the first post, just that you want to return it

As asked in the previous post, is there something wrong with it or do you just not want it anymore?

I am going to assume it's faulty. Tesco do have the right to get the fault confirmed, so testing is needed, the OP needs to prove it's faulty before Tesco do anything.

The onus is on Tesco not the OP as it is under 6 months old (again assuming it is faulty). Any fault within the first 6 months is assumed to be inherent unless the retailer can prove otherwise.

If Tesco want to contact HP to confirm the fault then that it is up to them, not the OP.
  • Thanks guys, yes I forgot to put, it is faulty.

Under 6 months? I think not.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

I had similar issue with Tesco and HP laptop in which the hinge had gone. I stood my ground in store and told them to contact HP and send them whatever photos they wanted but my contract was with the seller, Tesco. Tesco customer assistant emailed photos of hinge from his own mobile phone and HP gave them confirmation that they could take it in for repair.
