Wall Mounted Kitchen Units

I will be fitting new kitchen units on the weekend. Few issues, that I would like to run by someone in the know.
The previous owners, having removed the old units, made a right botch of the wall, and there are holes drilled into the stud plasterboard wall all over the place. So I do not like the idea of fixing around them, and then hanging the cupboard.
Someone has mentioned attaching a batten to the stud wall, and then hang them off that.
May sound like a silly question, but would the the brackets then be attached to the batten, (top and bottom) ??and the units hung off them?
Surley, this will cause the units to protrude by 1". How is this worked around?
If any one has a visualisation of this, that would be most appreciated.

If it's a stud plasterboard wall, as opposed to solid brick, then you absolutely HAVE to fix into the studs - none of these special plasterboard fixing will take the weight of a full kitchen cupboard.
Ideally you would locate the studs behind the plasterboard and screw directly into them. However, in the real world the studs are likely to be not placed where you need to place the fixings. In this case then yes, you screw a batten into the studs, then screw your fixings into this - so in effect, the weight is still being taken by the battens, not the plasterboard.
As you point out, this does mean that the units will stand proud of the wall. You could channel out the plasterboard first, where you place the battens, this may be enough to leave the units flush. Otherwise, just leave them proud of the wall and use some fillets to fill around the gaps. If done neatly you won't even notice.
Hope this helps.0 -
Many thanks, So I assume fit to top batten, and the units just 'rest' on the bottom batten.
Would 2x1 be sufficient?0 -
If this is a run of cabinets then you can use a continual hanger rail like this : http://www.hafele.co.uk/shop/p/cabinet-hanging-wall-rails/cabinet-hanger-wall-rail/68656/9788
you can then screw into studs regardless of whether they fall in relation to the actual cabinet, just cut the rail short of the run so it's hidden each end, then notch out the rest of the units so everything remains flush, screw into every stud you can then use toggle or hollow wall anchors in between.
If you were to baton between studs then I'd cut the plasterboard out to fit it properly in between, whether you wanted to bother with re boarding or not is up to you as it would be hidden behind the cabinets.0 -
One or more of these will be ideal. Screw into the studs and hang a run of units off it and no messing about with battens.
