Spam calls who purchase my details from "data companies"

Hi folks,

I had a missed call today so Googled the number and found it on https://www.whocallsme.com with lots of comments saying who the company was (a life insurance sales company) and saying it was spam...

Anyway the company in question had responded on there to say "We buy data from reputable UK data companies. They are sold to us as "opt-in" data. We only contact telephone numbers from these lists."

So that got me thinking that if I unsubscribe from their list, I am still floating around on this "UK data companies" list somewhere being sold left right and centre...

So I want to know do I have a right to demand from the life insurance company above, to know who they purchased my details from, so that I can approach that company to remove my details from the master list...

If anyone can point me in the direction of any relevant legislation on the matter?

    The earlier 'excuse' that you suggest would seem null and void... just managed to find this:

    This right, commonly referred to as subject access, is created by section 7 of the Data Protection Act. It is most often used by individuals who want to see a copy of the information an organisation holds about them. However, the right of access goes further than this, and an individual who makes a written request and pays a fee is entitled to be:

    • told whether any personal data is being processed;
    • given a description of the personal data, the reasons it is being processed, and whether it will be given to any other organisations or people;
    • given a copy of the information comprising the data; and given details of the source of the data (where this is available).
    "

    The later 'excuse' you suggest could be used I guess, or the mention of "where this is available" mentioned above as well...

    I have quoted the above to them and asked for the info anyway so will see what happens.

    I'm one stubborn b@$t@*d...... i'll happily fight to the bitter end :rotfl:

    Anyway to be fair to the life insurance company, they just replied to me within 15 minutes of me contacting them. They have given me the details of the company whom they purchased my details from so i've just fired off the same e-mail to them - lets see what "Spam Lists R Us" come back with......

  • Another update..... this is all happening very quickly :):)

    "Spam Lists R Us" have just come back and said they will remove my details from data they have brokered (as they "don't hold data themselves") and will investigate where my data came from and let me know.....

    So far, so good.

    Check that your voters role details are not viewable to the public.

    I had my bank pass my details to a company without my permission after insisting on knowing where they had got my details from - I then phoned them up & went ballistic as It is not on & threatened them with breaching my data protection.

    I got £70 for my upset - worth pursuing & use the 'breaching data protection act' to get them to stand up & listen.
