What filesystem does the Nikon expect? Maybe the card has been formatted with the wrong filesystem (e.g. ntfs or ex-fat instead of fat32/16).

I always format my removable drives from a Linux live image, using the good old fashioned command line and then I do a filesystem check with "fsck".

    Ex-fat I believe:

The golden rule with any new camera and memory card is to insert the card and then select format from within the camera's menu. Don't format on a computer.

You're misquoting me. I have never said you should format the sd from the PC. although I don't think that's the problem.

No I didn't misquote you, I simply used your post as a springboard to make a new and different point. :)

Brilliant - many thanks. I did do an internet search but you were more successful. I'll go back to John Lewis now. I've also ordered a different card meanwhile.

I'm sure you will have no problem with JL, but do keep in mind that there is a remote possibility that they may want to deal with the purchaser rather than you. Would be good if you can take the receipt with you.

    I didn't do that.

Have got the emails from when it was ordered online and it'll be on my credit card bill. It was a present from my (more) aged (than me) parent but I did the order and payment to JL. Internet banking is just great!

    Thanks.

Just an update - bought a new card Xtreme Photo Pro and it worked, first time perfectly. Now I can go back to JL and complain.

Once again, thanks for the info. Really helpful.

Final update...I phoned JL on Friday. The CS agent said someone else would ring me on Monday. That call came yesterday afternoon. Result is a full refund of the cost of the two memory cards and a goodwill gesture of payment for the replacement card I bought.

Great resolution service. I've now booked a half day 1-1 tuition session to learn how to use the camera.

Tuition is no substitute for learning and understanding the basics on your own terms.
Under tuition, people tend to pick up a few points without really understanding what they're being told.
A bit like computer science grads who learn enough to pass, get a job in IT and then try to plug a USB cable into a parallel port.

My first DSLR, a Nikon D40x, I took nearly 3000 photo's just experimenting and learning.

Start in aperture priority (A) mode, get used to playing with depth of field, understand how this affects your images, why a larger DOF requires longer shutter times and how to use this to shoot without flash (never use on board flash if you can avoid it).

Shutter priority (S) is hardly ever useful (because you have no control on DOF), then manual (M) is where you'll be when your trying out long exposures on a tripod/etc.

Also watch Youtube videos, there are some good photographers who've put together some great videos for people to learn from. "ThatNIKONGuy" is just one example.
