GoDaddy - Please Help!

I'm at the end of my tether here so any advice will be so, so gratefully received! I'm sorry that this post is so long, I just wanted to make it clear what's going on.

I bought several domain names/URLs through GoDaddy about a year ago. I paid for each of them for one year and now don't want to keep any of them.

GoDaddy has an auto-renew function that, if turned on, means that you'll be automatically charged for another year when the domains come up for renewal. I switched that off for all the domains I don't want to keep and ignored all the emails reminding me to renew, and gradually they've all been cancelled. Except one.

With this last domain, I couldn't turn off the auto-renew. This turned out to be because I'd paid for something called "protected registration", which is meant to stop evil internet wizards from stealing your domain names, or something. I was thinking of starting a business with this domain (I never used it) and obviously thought it would be so good that people would want to steal it.

To cancel protected registration, GoDaddy want you to send them a colour copy of your government photo ID. I really don't want to do that, because:

1) It's obviously just a bad idea to give out your personal details like that.

2) They didn't take a copy of it when I signed up so this doesn't make any sense - surely I could still not be an authorised person to do that?

3) From Googling this problem, it looks like they might then ask for proof that I represent the business that I might have registered it under, and I don't have that because there is no business. (I can't remember whether I registered it as me or my fledgling business idea.)

4) Again from Googling, it seems that even after I hand over my ID, they might STILL not cancel it without making me sign some dodgy contract.

After discovering all that, my next thought was to transfer the one domain I DO want to keep to another registrar (which I've done) and just delete my GoDaddy account. Except you can't delete a GoDaddy account. And you can't delete your payment information (i.e. card details) when they're linked to a domain that's set to auto-renew.

So what can I do? My only ideas are:
  • Mess up my card details - it looks like I can change everything but the number - so they can't charge the card (or can they?)
  • Buy one of those pre-paid credit-card-style gift cards and replace my
credit card with that (there just has to be A payment method, I don't think it has to be the same one)

But if I do either of those things, I'm worried they'll still insist we have a contract and charge me for both the renewal and some kind of fee. It looks from their T+Cs like that's something they do (sorry, I'm too new to post links!).

I have spoken to them on the phone but they insisted the only way to cancel was to send them my ID. They were also painfully chirpy "We can't WAIT to show you our AWARD-WINNING customer service!" so I'd really rather not do that again.

Again, I know this post is ridiculously long, but I'd really appreciate any advice that any of you kind souls can give me!

Give them the ID, blank out anything you don't want.

They are doing this for the very reason you wanted it protected.

I've had to do this to buy from the US with a UK card, its no biggie - have to say every time I've interacted with GoDaddy over the years its been a pretty pleasant experience.
  • Will they accept it if I blank stuff out? What's the minimum they'd need to see?

Not sure what you registered against that domain? Do a WHOIS search for it - this should give the registration details.

Protected domain is yet another snake oil scheme - if you want to protect it you simply re-register it when it's about to expire.

    Errrm, think you have misunderstood.

Protected domain uses a domains by proxy address, so your actual details are hidden and instead a holding company is shown on the whois.

    Name, address would be minimum.

I used my driving license, blanked out my DOB, License number and they were fine with that.

I was fine with that as everything else was pretty much available on the internet anyway

To cancel protected registration, GoDaddy want you to send them a colour copy of your government photo ID. I really don't want to do that, because:

There's very little personal info printed on your passport. Just send a copy of that with your DOB and the passport number blanked out, all they can then see is your name.
Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear
  • send the doc , this has happened to me also , they just need this for verification , edit sensitive data and leave only a few parts
