Do wireless adapters work with any device that uses Ethernet?

Hi all

We have recently upgraded our broadband from Sky to plusnet, whilst keeping SKY TV. The old broadband was sky and a lfew of devices in our House were plugged directly into the Ethernet socket on the back of the SKY router. This was the case for our home CCTV PVR which is situated in the loft. There is literally an Ethernet cable that goes up through the cavity of the House and into the loft. Obviously this means that the PVR in the loft was connected directly by network cable to the router downstairs. Now... Problem time... Plusnet have installed the new modem & router at the opposite end of the living room and while it is true that Plusnet is miles better we were left with the problem that the Sky TV box and the PVR cable are now at the other side of the room. So, we told SKY and they sent us a little wireless adapter box that plugs into the back of the Sky box to make it wireless now. So, my question is... Do these magic wireless adapter boxes work for any device because I'd like to now make the PVR in the loft wireless by using such a box?
There's no way we can run a cable from one side of the living room to the other side.

Thanks all.

PS, the PVR is Hikvision brand.

I would be tempted to buy some homeplugs , there are some that allow you to plug another device into them (as big as a double plug) , however not all device adaptors might fit , connect one behind the router with a short Ethernet lead , and reroute (coil up) the Ethernet cable from the cctv (or use a new short cable) and plug this into the other homeplug on the upstairs' landing/bedroom

Not for any device unfortunately... could you do it with powerline plugs (that transfer via the mains wiring)?

Do i take it you've gone to fibre, and part of the installation was to move the master socket?

You can use any old access point as the other end of a bridge. I have my TV connected to my router with an old Airport Express, but any old access point would do. You connect it to the TV (or in your case PVR) with a short ethernet cable, and configure it to join the wireless network provided by your router.

    As someone else has said,
I'd use the old sky router as a bridge and use power-line adapters between that and the new plusnet

... remembering that it's possible to get flat ethernet cable.

    or even homeplugs ,

OP stated "There's no way we can run a cable from one side of the living room to the other side"

so lets forget the cable angle for a moment and suggest a wireless way of doing this
  • Thanks all.

Looks like it will be homeplugs. However, we bought some from Currys a few years ago and spent a full day trying to get them to pair. In the end we abandoned it and assumed the House wiring was faulty.
