If you can 'afford' a Merc, why not pay real, proper, cash for something older/different make and know it's yours?

Because sometimes 'new' is better/more reassuring/guaranteed etc etc. The trick is to get the best deal available at the time

I've just bought a new car. My inclination was to pay cash (lucky enough to be able to do this) however 0% for 36 months and £1k cheaper than cash. I can cancel the deal and repay the lot if I want at any point with no or a very small penalty.
