My biggest debt was statute-barred yesterday...

Does a debt being staute barred remove the moral imperative to repay? I think that if I had incurred debt then I would still feel I ought to repay it if I was now in a position to do so.
I appreciate everyone may not feel that way though.0 -
I'm not saying they have done anything wrong, my point is if you have borrowed the money then there is a moral responsibility to pay it back.
To go back to the OP's original question as to why they are feeling a mixture of guilt and elation, this could explain the guilt.LBM: Dec 2012 - Debt £38,180/ Now £0.

When your bank rate jacks you to 30% interest when they know you can least afford it, morals kind of go out of the window. Happened to me and I was working 7 days to run a business and keep people employed. Company is still going but in reality got strangled by the banks closing all avenues down. Whatever. It's a hard game and I have no problem playing a hard game back at them.0

Debt is far too wide ranging an issue for anyone to pass judgement IMO.
There can be a variety of reasons why someone doesn't pay back what they owe; affordability, refusing to engage with creditors / DCAs due to their unreasonable behaviour, etc.
When I was in debt I was being called constantly asking to up my monthly payment when I had lost my job and was on benefits seeking further work. I told them repeatedly I was paying everything I could afford and would contact them when I could afford more. They eventually got the hint but only after I told them if they didn't stop harassing me Id stop paying them altogether.
If they had carried on I would've stuck to my word. What will your verse be?

I suspect it is probably an innate sense that I'm always in the wrong that I've had since childhood - even when I am in the right. I was brought up to not question anything, ESPECIALLY if it is in a letter NO MATTER who the letter is from, because letters are OFFICIAL.
I feel a bit better today. I hate to think what some of you would say to a person whos circumstances have forced them into bankruptcy...

I'm glad you feel better today, I know how things can get to you along this journey to becoming debt free.
I hope you don't feel that I am singling you with my responses, just giving my opinions on the subject as a whole.LBM: Dec 2012 - Debt £38,180/ Now £0.
