Ditching Sky...where to go now?

Hi everyone, we are considering leaving Sky as it's so expensive but would like some suggestions re which other providers are any good? We currently have broadband (which is a pain as it won't work unless we are virtually sitting on top of the router!), TV and landline with them. Our TV is the basic package (no films/sport etc) and we rarely watch any Sky progs so paying £75 a month for this seems extortionate. Any ideas please? Thanks :-)

Find out what's wrong with your router if the WiFi is so bad.

A new router is pretty cheap anyway.

Would Netflix offer you the content that you are interested in?

Great Satellite TV - No Monthly Bills

Hello, we’re Freesat. That's right, subscription free satellite telly.
If you've already got a dish, it couldn't be easier to switch to Freesat. Simply plug in a Freesat box or TV & connect to broadband to access Catch Up services. Then sit back and enjoy over 200 TV & Radio channels, with no monthly fees. http://www.freesat.co.uk/

£75 for the basic package ? You must be making lots of phone calls outside of your allowance or paying for extras like box office films etc.

I've just signed up to Virgin.152Mb fibre,230 tv channels ( everything apart from movies and sports) and weekend calls for a lot less than you're paying.
Have you got virgin in your street ?
  • Thanks everyone. I didn't realise that the router could be at fault but we are leaving Sky anyway as it's extortionate compared to others that I've looked at today.
Daz-we just have the basic package, honest! I have just called them and we are paying £35.75 for the TV alone. We hardly ever use the landline and have only ever had a box office film once a few years ago, so it looks like we have been paying way over the odds.
I'm going to swot up on BT, Talk Talk, Freesat etc (we can't get Virgin) so if anyone can give me any recommendations that would be great thanks :-)

Changing your ISP won't magically improve the wi-fi within the house. 9 times out of 10 it's caused by internal factors. Have you done the simple stuff, like changing the wireless channel?
The basic TV package is currently £21.50, so something is awry here to make up £35.75, Suggest you break down the bill and post the figures. If you still want some subscription channels, then ask for your MAC and cut a retention deal: you won't get much from tier one CS, you need to get through to retentions for that.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I'm in same boat just cancelled sky today and looking around. Bt is cheap for basic package with no extra channels. Had a great deal last month with £75 sainsbury voucher but that seems to have gone! Maybe come back IV you wait awhile? I'm signing up to Bt
  • A few months back I was paying £68.05 for
    Entertainment
    Sports
    Movies

and I got fed up with the price so decided to call and quit, but I made sure I got a comparison lined up. So I used BT TV to my advantage.

I am currently with BT Broadband so I said I was moving to BT TV
    They would offer
    Films
    Entertainment
    Sky Sports was £22
    HD packs etc...
    Total was around £47

So anyway I am calling to cancel and they put me through to cancellation team. Went through the process and at the very end asked why I want to cancel. I was playing chicken until this point hoping they wouldnt cancel

I told them I feel I am paying too much for what I get compared to BT TV.

So they instantly offered a deal and I accepted.
They made me a 25% discount customer, upgraded to full entertainment, full sky sports, full movies, HD pack and sports HD. Now we pay £52 for everything! I didnt mind paying extra as I feel now we are paying a decent price for the package offered.

It was actually working out £54.60 and I asked if that was the best they could do, if it was slightly cheaper I would accept. So they said they cant lower but can add a credit of £2.60 per month to my account. So £31.20 came off my first bill.

Also got our BT Broadband down to £16 a month for Infinity + weekend calls, same process. Told them skys deal with fibre and hey presto! Cheaper broadband, our deal should be £26

I think it depends who you get on the day and how you come across.

Actually just search for my bt deal, sorry its down to £16.65 not flat £16

    "Thank you for your reply.

I am delighted that you wish to remain with BT.

As agreed I have placed an order to up-grade you to Unlimited Infinity 1 and weekend calls at the reduced price of £16.65 per month."

They were going to offer £23 for infinity II but my area wouldnt get the speed offered so no point.

If you still want Sky TV then just get Now TV, the main Sky channels are £6.99 a month and movies £9.99.
