First utility variable DD comes out before bill viewable

Wondered if anyone else has experienced this. A couple of months ago I changed from fixed to variable direct debit because the DD was far too high and they wouldn't let me change it. Two months have passed, in which I paid nothing because the account was so much in credit.
Today I expect a DD to come out. The bills are dated 25th of each month, DD 2nd. But bills are not available to view for over a week after they are supposedly dated. Meaning I don't know how much they intend to take until after the fact. Is this normal?
Ultimately, it's not causing me any serious problems, but I definitely dislike being charged unspecified amounts. Since they must know at the point of actually taking my money how much I owe, it seems odd that they can't tell me!

Do you look for your bill or wait for the E-mail notification?
My FU bill is usually available to read about three days after I've submitted my reading (unless there's a weekend in the way) which is usually a couple of days before I get the e-mail.
If you are giving them a monthly reading then it's not really all that difficult to estimate yourself how much they are going to take within a pound or two, assuming that they are actually using the readings that you give them.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
