aol internet speeds question

sorry to sound think

but i installed a programme to clean my registry and it had a internet tweek bit on it so decided wot the hell in for a penny in for a pound so to speek. prob now is although it seems to have sorted out my network settings im not sure if it is me or if it indead goin faster as i am no good at all this.

im on aol silver and it is now sayin my

lacal area connection 2.2mbps

and my modem saying
dsl modem
tx 288kbps
rx 2272

is this any quicker that it usually is as never noticed the numbers b4:o

AOL silver is only 512kbps (half a meg).

You can't really go by what local area connection says as mine says 100mb yet i'm only on 512kbps and that has been confirmed by a speed test.

Can you go to Speed Test page on ADSLGuide.org's website (click detailed output), and post the results here.

Just done my results and these are as follow:-

Downstream: 481 Kbps (60.1 KB/sec) 519 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream: 119 Kbps (14.9 KB/sec) 128 Kbps (inc. overheads)

The above results are average for a Cable modem running at only 512k.

With a WAN (wide area network or Internet) there is also a LAN (Local area network - Intranet)

LAN's work very much faster than WAN's because of the distance or area covered.

You are connected to the 'net at 512k as those speeds quoted are average for 512kbps (half a meg) for anyone on ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line).

Basically, you are connected to the internet at the speed that you subsribe to AOL for, that is, AOL silver's package which is 512k.

If you're interested then AOL's silver package allows you to download (retrieve) information from the internet at upto 512kbps. Foxy, you actually downloaded (the 'downstream' result) at 484kbps which is very near the 512kbps quoted by AOL as the maximum.

Internet speed can vary and depends on amount of traffic accessing that site - hence the reason why the speed quoted is 'upto'.

The Upstream figure is simply how fast you can transfer data from your PC to the net. e.g. using an FTP program.

Or, more usually for home users, sending a large attachment (e.g. photo) via e-mail.

So a 1MB jpeg photo would take about 30 seconds from when you click 'Send' to it completing and clearing from your Outbox.
