I have had a contactless reject and asked for PIN. Of course you then have to insert the card. There is no such thing as tap (contactlessly) + PIN.

I had it happen once in McDonalds.

It came up "Bank Security Check - Please Insert Card".

Think I just need a new card, then. I only really use it one shop and it didn't work the last couple of times. Used a different card and didn't think about it until I heard something about security limits today. Didn't get any kind of message like that so probably mine just stopped working!

Have you tried unlocking the pin at an ATM?

My Partner had a 'contactless' card - tried at two Co-op's without success, third time lucky at Lidl !
I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard

Yeah the PIN's fine, can get cash out no problem, contactless just randomly stopped working. Tried paying with my PIN today then tried a contactless transaction later on - same problem. The bank said it sounds like I damaged my card so got another on the way.

The cash machine probably just used the magnetic stripe instead. If you don't have any spare cards you should still be able to use that card.

If the machine themselves doesn't prompt for you to swipe the card after 3 failed chip reads, just insert the card backwards yourself 3 times and then the machine will let you swipe the card. (While this doesn't work on some terminals, it does on most.) It also shows a massive flaw in bypassing the chip altogether.

There is actually. This is also a thing in countries like Australia, a PIN is asked and entered without the card being inserted. They can also do contactless transactions above the 100 AUD limit but have to enter their PIN as well (all the time). The latter feature is coming to UK cards shortly. Some new UK Amex cards already support this in BP.

So the PIN number has to be sent to the acquiring bank? That could be interesting in the concept of security. In the UK currently, the PIN is only sent to the card for verification, but of course you can't do that if there's no card.

What happens if your using it on the London tube? If it isnt accepted at the barrier, there isnt a pin pad is there or have i just failed to notice it?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

The tube network uses a different Contactless system (Visa, MC and AmEx have given them a waiver), so the security check isn't a problem.
