I am looking to buy shares in GSK but when I click to buy it states these are ex dividend shares. I am purchasing through Charles Stanley into my S+S ISA.
I believe it means you are not entitled to a payout in a forthcoming dividend however , GSK are not due till November?

I know I can ring CS for advice on Monday but I'm hoping someone can explain now why this is?

It just means that you won't get the next dividend (due in a few weeks) but you will get all future ones (until you sell).

"The ex-dividend date will be 19 February 2015 (18 February 2015 - ADR holders), with a record date of 20 February 2015 and a payment date of 9 April 2015."

This means that whoever held them on market opening on 19 February gets that dividend.

Thanks Ffacoffipawb. I didn't see the February dividend so that is now clear.

They pay dividends quarterly so the next one (after April) will be paid in July.

Pretty good bet. The worry with the GSK and Astrazenca has been the "patent cliff" where all their good money earning drugs were coming out of patent protection and they had nothing to replace them with.

Having poured money into R&D and acquisitions the problem does not seem so acute now but I am not really qualified to judge.
