Student living cost help.

Options
Hi there,

I have twins wishing to study the same Degree at the same college/university.

We went up to an open day yesterday, to find out that living expenses eg a £300 Bond, and then £650 part rent is payable per student is payable up front. Would there be anywhere that we'd be able to get any help towards these fees.
£1900, would there be any bursary/ grants that we could obtain to help to cover this?

  • I am a student myself and no bursaries are normally paid until they would enrol in september if they are eligible for anything.Applying for student accounts who would authorise them overdrafts a little early once they have uni place is a possibilty but thats the only thing I can think of.

However,in my university only a deposit is payable upfront and part rent up front is something I have never heard off so sounds strange,as rent is always asked for once they have student finance in?

Would your children consider non university/private accommodation as they are generally cheaper?

  • Hi, I'm in a similar position, also with twins. I'm a single parent, newly self-employed and still at the point were my set-up outgoings have exceeded my income. No spare cash.

My sons want to study for Music degrees. The college they want to go to has no accommodation of its own, so they have to go with an independent student accommodation company. Apart from the £50 "administration fee" each to initially apply for accommodation, there's a £95 "administration fee" each to process the contracts, then they have to pay another £50 "administration fee" each for the privilege of paying a part-term fee of £500 each in August. Then, to add insult to injury, the full balance for the term - another £1200 each - is due on October 1st. Their Student loan/grant will not arrive until October 4th. And for every day their payment is delayed they are charged interest and admin fees.

So I am searching for ways to get them there but I recognise that it may not be possible.

And we're told education is available to all.
