No proper HR department would ever divulge ANY personal information without explicit agreement from the employee, suspected card fraud or not.

It's right though. I remember maybe 12 years or more ago, when I first applied for an AMEX card they asked "who is the contact at your employer?" Cheeky sods! I answered "I am the contact at my employer"; I got the card. Are they still asking for this outrageous piece of information?

I guess not. I entered my direct work number & unlike the number on our website (which goes to the call centre...) it passed their authentication & submitted.

Most applications ask for your home, work and mobile number these days, or at least one contact number. Personally I don't see what the fuss is about.

I remember about 20 years ago First Direct phoning my employer to check I worked there as part of the application process. No personal information was divulged by my employer and they told me that they phoned.

I give my mobile or desk number, but ask that they don't call me because I cannot talk privately in a shared office.

I gave them my mobile number, which is hardly ever switched on ( old git with no friends that know my number)
so Santander can phone it !
i.e. to give a 'one time only' pass code to enter online, if I am setting up new payees etc.

No problems, works well, just turn the old mobile on when needed.

just remembered....may need to put a bit on it...spent £10 last year OMG

I don't think it is unreasonable for a company who is lending you money to ask for a contact number. If you are not prepared to give a contact number then why should they lend to you?
