slow cookers. Not the cheapest way

    I don't use my slow cooker for all things, I use it when I want a nice, tender cheap joint or a dinner that I don't have to watch for hours. It's not often on for more than 6 hours on high - quite often just 2-3 hours on high or 6 hours on low depending on the meal (although perhaps my batch sizes are smaller than other people's and this would affect the cooking time.)

    You could try boiling something up for 20mins, then just wrapping in a duvet or fleece blankets to cook the rest of the day.
