    Clearly few share my views.

Unlike in any other sport, boxers intend to physically injure their opponents by knockout. Allowing people to intentionally inflict injuries upon others for public entertainment and private profit is barbaric. Children especially are trained in these ways. When boxers turn professional, they have often already fought in at least 50 fights in their youth, which does not include the countless rounds of sparring during training sessions. Boxers are essentially being trained in violent ways, often at a young age. There is no place in the modern world for these barbaric ways.

We are too quick in this little society to hail anyone who is successful and identify them as a “role model” for our young people without stopping to consider the effects this could potentially have on the young.

I am all for identifying young people who have excelled, beaten adversity etc and commending them for their success but the logic for high profiling an individual who inflicts physical damage on a fellow human being in the name of “sport” totally escapes me.

Maybe you shouldn't watch it then.

Nothing more satisfying than seeing someone get their face caved in for my amusement.

I think anyone who draws our community together to support him, be it be in the name of sport or not, is deserving of being classed as a role model.

    This 100% :T

Just because he is a boxer he can't be a role model ?

He has done a lot for cross community relations in our wee country and for that he should be applauded :T
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

I'm not convinced he brings both communities in NI together, this seems to be a marketing ploy issued out by his team. He comes across as lacking in discipline and professionalism, his squaring up to his opponent and vice versa prior to the match may have made for great publicity but it gives off a poor image.

I do congratulate Frampton for what he's achieved but considering most of his fights are in Belfast and outside of NI he is a relative unknown, I think his achievements are limited.

Some surgeons have been carrying out a survey of boxing and brain damage - they started by asking 100 boxers if they thought blows to the head caused brain damage. One said he thought it did, one said he thought it didn't. Ninety eight couldn't understand the question.

    Seriously?

He is from a loyalist heartland, marrying a catholic. Boxing has historically been a sport more popular in nationalist areas and he has not been an overnight success. Like McGuigan, Best, Taylor, Higgins, McIlroy etc he is a sportsman who all in NI can get behind with no one able to claim him for one side or the other.

When he fights they cheer him on the Shankill and the Falls... what could be better than that?

And in case you don't know the amateur dramatics that come with weigh ins are all part of the act. They all do it.

I disagree, people on either side may like him but that does not mean he unites communites, it's a foolish statment that the Frampton crew use as their narrative.

The Frampton crew havent been pushing any narrative about him uniting communities.

He's not Ghandi - or Martin Luther King - but that wee man is doing more for cross community work than nost of the politicians in Stormont will ever do.

The fact that its in a sport like boxing is by the by. You dont like it - fine. Just please dont spoil it for the majority who are happy to support him every step of the way. ( And I say that as a non boxing fan )
