Horse Insurance

Possibly a strange question, but is it possible to insure a horse for a period of 3/4 months or is it only possible to do it for a whole year?

Slightly complicated but my daughters stable is closing for a while and want people to take charge of their favoured horse, but need to make sure that they/we are insured. Obviously this is not something we have done before, or even thought about, but it is an exciting opportunity as long as this cost is doable for a short period of time as we don't want to pay for a year when we will only be in charge for up to 120 days.

Hope that makes sense!

Do the horses belong to the stable?

Neigh lass or Laddie , sorry I couldn't resist it, :rotfl:

Usually by the time they take off admin fees it may work out more expensive, I would phone around some brokers and also the stables insurers as they might do a deal.

It gets complicated but technically the stable owns them, but for this period of time they are giving them away so the insurance has to be taken on by ourselves just for this time. After the 4 months things will revert back to how they are now - just the way we like it really!

It makes neigh sense to me either!

It's going to be difficult to arrange cover for a few reasons

    a) You don't really own them
    b) A new policy will exclude any existing conditions
    c) You only want a few months cover

Your best bet will be to try a few specialist companies eg adverts in horse magazines and / or brokers in rural areas.

Please please please avoid anything underwritten by Equine & Livestock eg eandl.co.uk

I thought it was going to be difficult where we don't own them. My daughter will be pleased to get an excuse to get a horse magazine so we can look at the ads!

I will make sure not to try with them. I don't think I even want to know why!

As any policy you manage to arrange won't cover any existing medical conditions and generally any medical conditions connected to the existing medical conditions. I would suggest you get it in writing that you're not liable for existing conditions and conditions directly connected.

If you don't get this you could end up with expensive bills

It's commonplace in the horse world for people to have horses on loan, so insurance companies are used to arranging cover even though technically there appears to be no insurable interest.
Perhaps it's a kind of lease, like an insurance and maintenance lease with property?

  • Are you a member of BHS? If not you should join as it will give you access to their legal helpline. It's app £6 a month. Will also give you some insurance but I'm assuming you want veterinary??
It's always the person who owns the horse that insures it. Will the horse be moving? Who will have the passport?

Horse insurance should be relatively easy to get for what you want. It is quite common for stables to lease horses out (or loan them) with a requirement being insurance. Just do a search for equine insurance on google - should throw up a few candidates. Be warned though - expect to pay £2-300 for 3 months. possibly try NFU (not the cheapest but they are rated very highly)
  • Thank you all.

I will look in to it all in more detail and hopefully it will all start to make sense to me - at the start of the day I was not expecting to have to start to think about this from scratch, let alone understand it!
