    MR Jarvis,

    I have a question.

I posted on here about removing a default maybe last week, one of the answers i received settled the argument.

The question relates to the same post. Why is it, when a default is removed, a credit score drops? It says this is because the average age of accounts has reduced?

Surely a default removal should outweigh the age of the defaulted account????

A better question would be: "why aren't you more transparent and admit that credit scores are made up by you, and that lenders won't see them and will judge credit applications on the information only and their own criteria?"

Or "Why does the credit score drop when I search my own file, as it's not seen be lenders"

Answer: Because we make up the score and make sure it goes up and down to ensure you become addicted to monitoring it. Hence we get money from you.

    Hi TakeItAsRed.

I can see why it would seem odd that your Experian score reduces when a default has come off the report. It will not always be the case that this happens as it will also depend on what other information is recorded on the report.

As a default gets older it has less impact on your Experian score, so by the time it reaches six years its effect on the score is low.

The average age of accounts is another factor which is taken into account in the score calculation as lenders like to be able to see an established credit history.

When the default has come off the average age of accounts will have decreased and in this case has had more of an influence on the score than positive effect of the default being removed.

The Experian score is calculated using all the information on your report so other factors will also play a part, such as if other defaults are still recorded on the report.

Our Credit Cafe video discusses scoring in more detail here

    Kind Regards

As you will be told on here by many other members, credit scores are made up by the CRA's and are meaningless when applying for credit.

Each lender has its own criteria and does not take these made up scores into consideration.

Your file will look better to any lender without the default on it.

    Good luck. :)
