  • The best place for a router is close to the openreach master socket. Telephone extensions aren't recommended, especially for fibre.

Is there a reason you're trying to move the router downstairs? If its to connect Ethernet devices to it via CAT5e, you would be better off leaving the router close to the openreach master socket, then using either powerlines to connect your additional devices around the home to it, or running a CAT5e Ethernet cable(s) down to the device(s).

If its for wireless coverage, you can install an additional wireless access point downstairs, again connected back to your router via either powerlines or cat5e.

Moral of story: for best speed/reliability, always leave router near openreach master socket then cable in devices to there.

No - that says it's a DSL router although the ports look like it's actually a cable router / AP which is what you need. Whatever it is G wireless was jaded about 10 years ago.

Look for wireless extenders or wireless access points that support at least N150 and preferably higher.

Good job I've got fibre with a piccy that big :)

I have the same problem - my fibre router is downstairs and the signal upstairs is virtually zero (around 1Mbps max)
I was recommended Powerline plugs before I found a much simpler solution
My TT "super-router" is extremely directional (much more so than my previous DSL router) - so I placed it on it's back and pointed it towards my PC upstairs and VOILA - 37Mbps !!

Should be OK, do bear in mind that you will never get anywhere near 500mbps, besides those only have 100mbps Ethernet ports
